What is Dull Skin?

When there are too many layers of built up dead skin this results in a dull complexion. When we are teenagers our natural skin cycle is 6 weeks from the birth of the cell to it naturally being exfoliated away (desquamation). As we age this process slows down, however environmental factors and not using the right products can also contribute. Simply increasing your skin’s exfoliating abilities will result in a shedding of this dead skin and a visibly more healthy, glowing appearance.

What can cause Dull Skin?

  • Ageing – Skin cycles slow down as we age
  • Makeup – Using heavy make-up will slow your skins exfoliating ability
  • Environmental – Pollution and dirt can stick to the skin and hold down dead skin cells
  • Using moisturiser – Using high street moisturiser sticks down the dead skin cells and stops your skin’s natural exfoliating abilities

What can I do to improve Dull Skin?

Keep skin clean – Cleansing twice daily is necessary to remove pollution and exfoliating 2-3 times per week will help remove the dead skin layer

Use acids – Cosmeceutical AHA’s help remove dead skin and stimulate new cell production

Have monthly facials – Having monthly facials will increase the cell turnover, tricking your skin into working in a way that it did when it was younger

Dull Skin FAQs

There are a few factors that cause skin to look dull
Dehydrated skin – Using high street moisturiser sticks down the dead skin cells and stops your skin’s natural exfoliating abilities
Dead skin cell build up – Each month the skin naturally sheds dead skin cells to make way for new ones, when the dead skin doesn’t get exfoliated away they build up causing dull, flakey skin, seasonal changes also contribute to skin changes, especially winter months
Smoking – This can impair the production of collagen and increase the oxidative stress in skin cells, so in turn this contributes to dull looking skin
Ageing – The loss of fatty tissue, reduction is collagen and hydration can all contribute towards skin becoming dull

Many environmental factors such as, lack of sleep, not exercising (being active enough), poor diet, dead skin build up, not having the right skincare routine, natural ageing and smoking can all be reasons that your skin is looking dull.

Dead skin cells are a main factor, due to the skin shedding 100s of skin cells daily, they over time accumulate on top of each other ( like dust particularly on a surface). This layer of dead skin cells prevent the skin from reflecting light and retaining hydration resulting in dull looking skin.

There are many ways to get your skin glowing again but the main link between them all is varying levels of exfoliation. Exfoliation is essential to improving the healthy natural ‘glow’ of your skin. By exfoliating at home regularly and using AHA’s such as glycolic and lactic acid, dead skin cells are removed from the surface of the skin and replaced by fresh, healthy, new skin cells.
For the best results on glowing skin, professional skin treatments such as HydraFacial and chemical peels can be used to get additional deeper exfoliation, resulting in instant and long lasting glowing skin benefits.

Hydrafacial is the best in clinic medical treatment to safely, quickly and effectively, suck away dead skin cells. It deeply exfoliates the skin’s surface, removing built up congestion while simultaneously infusing the skin with key nutrients consisting of peptides, hyaluronic acid and antioxidants.

High street moisturisers are a combination of oil and water that sit on the surface layers of the skin. With daily use these dead skin cells continue to be stuck down, resulting in your natural skin cycles being slowed and the skin’s barrier function being weakened.
For the optimum glowing, healthy skin, it is far more important to be cleansing daily AM & PM, using an exfoliator a minimum of 3 times per week and using a daily ph balancing toner with AHA’s & BHA’s. Having a thorough skin cleaning routine will allow your skin to function at its optimum level. It will be noticeably brighter and more glowing and will allow any other products you apply on top to penetrate deeper into the skin.

Dull skin is skin that looks lacklustre, flat, or even grey, and may even feel rough or bumpy to the touch. It is often accompanied by uneven skin tone, making skin appear dry and patchy.

Do exfoliate your skin a minimum of 3 times per week
Do use AHA’s such as glycolic or lactic acid
Do have professional exfoliating treatments such as HydraFaical or chemical peels
Don’t use high street moisturiser

While drinking water is essential for overall health, it is not the be all and end all when it comes to skin hydration. Drinking water does not necessarily mean it is going to go to the skin as it is distributed to every cell in your body, this is why using low molecular weight hydrators such as hyaluronic acid and using exfoliators is essential to help with normal cell function and stimulate natural hydration making processes.

No! Vaseline is an occlusive product designed to stick to the surface of the skin. Slugging has become a viral social media trend and involves covering your face in vaseline. While this may provide your skin with a temporary ‘glow’, this is just because the vaseline is sitting on top of your ski. Long term it actually slows down natural skin cycles, leading to your skin barrier being weakened and your skin ultimately looking more dull in the long run.
